There’s no way you would miss your sight from this home although you just see it at a glance. Its façade of wood T&G paneling as well as the red wall accent are beautiful focal point in its forest surrounding. Designed by architect Miller Hull Partnership and was awarded an American Institute of Architects Housing Award. The modern home features gently sloping roof that houses kitchen, entry and studio. The tower features open plan living room and master bedroom above. With extensive glass walls, there was necessary for the architects to create the large overhangs to protect the interiors and to provide shelter. Each curve is determined by a set of diagonal movements and the sun orientation. The light looking structure and the “twist” design can be accomplished thanks to the reducing in the building’s load bearing for the concrete structure. With large spans of the supporting structures, with only four supporting structures available (the elevator shaft, two pillars and one inner column), a large, column-free space is created and the glass can be used to capture views from all corners.

The architect expects to maximize this single story house’s function in the smallest space possible while at the same time, dealing with the inclination of the site and its position. Creating a comfortable house, it was necessary to use bio-climatic design with passive thermal and ventilation. The strategies were the use of automatic-controlled natural ventilation through open window systems and pulley system to synergize with the design of the structure. The design of the structure itself consists of huge glass walls and windows and an inclined roof. It also provides more passive lighting and view.
Home Designs Niklas Larsen, Saturday, March 25th 2017, 11:15:53 AM. The Family of art collectors John and Molly Chiles found this mid century house in terrible condition, but they also found that the steel structure of the mouse was still strong and decide to build a new, dramatic open-designed house based on the remain. The concept and the form of the new house provides open perches and shelter both for retreat for the family and the extensive art collections. The main level’s modern, open floor plan creates loft-like spaces in which low walls, area rugs, and mid-century modern furnishings loosely define boundaries between living room, dining room, office, kitchen, and breakfast area. This plan encourages movement through the various spaces and levels of the house. The roof garden combines elements that serve, both in form and reason, to counter the clearly defined steel structure and to evoke feelings of height and expansion. Because her house is sited halfway down a hillside and nestled in a stand of old-growth beech trees, Molly Chiles envisioned the roof deck as a large-scale “table on top of the house” where friends could gather for social occasions in a space with views across the treetops to the distant horizon. As a design/build firm, Tonic worked with a structural engineer and steel crafters to fabricate a striking spiral staircase that connects the main living level to the roof deck. Clipped onto the side of the house, the outdoor stair’s helical form stands in contrast to the grid-like steel structure.A gently curving driveway offers ever-changing vantage points to view the house’s exuberant form. A steel and ipe wood bridge spans a private walled garden and connects the drive to the front door. Project Name: Chiles Residence. Location: Raleigh, North Carolina. Architecture: Tonic Design Contractor: Tonic Construction. Structural engineer: Richard Kaydos-Daniels. Steel craft: McConnel Studios, Raleigh, NC. Photographer: Jim West, Raleigh, NC.
Home Designs Adeline Soós, Wednesday, March 22nd 2017, 07:46:29 AM. From the outside, the home looks so impressive. Large roof shades the upper side of the entrance stair. A high stair with about single floor height that climbs from the concrete front patio pavement. Accompanies the high stair is the slope garden with wonderful half buried lighting. At the rear, at the high ground level, the landscaping comes in more varieties. A pool is built next to a long wooden deck. The pool is curved, half round and is adorned with red tiles for one edge. The lawn looks minimalist and the pathway is made of stone slabs with irregular shapes. There’s another pool just before the wooden deck. And closer to the house, large overhang shades the rear porch.
