This modern cubical wood home with minimalist labyrinth-shape interior is located in Kanousan, Japan. This cube wood forest house was built as a getaway for a family working in Tokyo. The beautiful modern exterior boasts a uniform wood façade interrupted only by the large windows with their diamond shape. Inside, this modern interior design is not as uniform as the exterior counterpart. It features labyrinth-shape / geometric walls with some opening toward the windows and the skylight above. The concept seemed like this home has a center opening that a person on the top floor can see the bottom floor. Or, natural light can illuminate the bottom floor from the top. Despite its geometric / labyrinth interior wall, the interior design as a whole is still minimalist.

Once inside, the façade is more geometric that the front façade. There’s an inside courtyard with grass and some trees. The interior design of this house is minimalist and is adorned with wood floor and wonderful textured wall with rustic style. The home office in this building is rather simple in design with its long table completed with a few armchairs.

The first floor is supported by the concrete columns that that rise from the foundation to support the steel beams and the concrete deck / floor. The steel beams support the wood frame volume that houses the private area of the house, the five suites for the couple, their three sons and a guest room. As a private area, the street side is enclosed by opaque board accented by a cement slab, (made of wood and covered on both faces with a cement slab). Other materials would be glass panels along with a nylon curtain. This level is located at the trees’ crowns so the architect of Nitsche Arquitetos Associados built a common veranda accessed by all those suites via aluminum sliding doors.

This modern rough stone house is one of our admired projects that has been successfully integrated itself in the site through the use of materials (materials that have been used before) and colors. The architect tried to treat the interior and exterior of this modern house as if they were a single thing. By using large glazing, there are plenty possibilities to admire the outdoors from anywhere inside the natural-looking interiors. It is also possible to feel being “inside” the landscape, the living room picture and the bedroom picture should speak themselves about living inside a landscape. The rough stone walls look so natural being inside such environment. Stone, wood and metal are constructed resembles typological archetypes used in the past, by country-men and cowboys that lived in the area.

The sides of the house is bordered with minimalist wood fence and the stilt foundation is really visible from the front. The entrance is designed under the platform and the owners and their guests should enter the house through the vertical beams.

The unique concrete house becomes a backdrop for the passers-by by imposing a bold architectural design that differs from any standard design of architectural.
